How to run a confidence pool online

A confidence pool is the thinking fan's pick'em: everyone picks the winner of every game on the slate, then ranks their picks from most to least confident. If there are 16 games, your surest pick wears 16, your coin-flip wears 1 — and each correct pick scores its number. The gutsy calls are what separate the board, which is exactly why groups that find straight pick'em too flat graduate to confidence.

It's also, by a wide margin, the format most likely to break a spreadsheet-run pool. This guide covers the rules to set and the mechanics of running it online.

The rules that matter

• •Each confidence number is used exactly once per week — no doubling up on 16s. The picker should enforce this, not the commissioner's Monday audit.
• •Every game gets a pick and a number. Decide what a blank means: most pools score an unpicked game as zero.
• •Missed week: standard is zero points for the week, but you stay in the pool. Season-long standings reward showing up.
• •Straight up or against the spread: confidence works with both. Straight up is friendlier; ATS confidence is for veteran groups.
• •Tiebreakers: season-long, break ties by total correct picks; weekly, a Monday-night total-points guess is the classic.

Why this format eats spreadsheets alive

Straight pick'em in a spreadsheet is tedious; confidence in a spreadsheet is a part-time job. Every week the commissioner must verify that each of 20+ players used each number exactly once, chase down duplicates before kickoff, then grade every pick and multiply by its weight. One typo in one cell and the standings are wrong — and someone WILL find it, three weeks later, after money has been discussed.

Online, all of that disappears: the pick form refuses duplicate confidence numbers at submit time, picks lock game-by-game at kickoff, and scoring runs off the live feed the moment each game goes final. The commissioner's weekly job shrinks to posting the link and enjoying the standings.

Setting up your pool

Pick your slate size first. Full-slate NFL confidence (every game, 1–16) is the classic. For mixed college/NFL groups, a curated slate of the week's 10–12 marquee games keeps the ranking meaningful — ranking 40 college games is homework, not fun. Decide the buy-in and payout split up front (a common shape: season champion takes half, quarter winners split the rest — quarter prizes keep the bottom half of the board caring in November), collect the money yourself by Venmo or cash, and publish the rules on the pool page.
