NHL Pick'em Pool: Weekend Hockey, Picked Once a Week
Hockey is the hardest major sport to predict โ hot goalies, empty-net goals, shootouts โ and that's exactly what makes an NHL pick'em fun. Nobody runs away with the standings, and the person in your group who barely watches can still win a weekend.
Pick'em Builder turns the NHL's nightly schedule into one weekly contest: a Friday-to-Sunday slate with the 8 best games chosen automatically, a lock at every puck drop, and live standings all weekend long.

How an NHL pick'em pool works
- 1
Choose straight up, confidence, or survivor
NHL pools are straight-up picks: choose the team that wins the game. Add confidence points for more strategy, or run a survivor pool. Go season-long with quarter standings, or keep it to a single weekend.
- 2
We build the weekend slate
Saturday is hockey's biggest night, and the slate pulls from Friday, Saturday, and Sunday games, then picks 8 marquee matchups. Swap in a midweek rivalry game or go to 12 or 16 games if your group wants more.
- 3
Share one link
Players join with a name and email โ no app, no account โ and get a reminder before the weekend so the picks actually get made.
- 4
Puck drop locks, live standings
Each game locks at its own start time, so Saturday's late games stay open while the early ones play. Results update live, and a recap goes out Sunday night.
NHL pool formats
Weekly pick'em
Pick the winner of each game on the weekend slate. With hockey's parity, the standings stay tight from October to April โ a great format for groups of any size.
Set this up โConfidence points
Rank your picks, 8 points for the surest down to 1 for the coin flip. In hockey, knowing which games are true mismatches is the whole skill.
Set this up โSurvivor
One team per weekend, never the same team twice. 32 teams and roughly 25 weekends โ and in a sport where favorites lose all the time, nobody's safe.
Set this up โOne weekend
Running something for a rivalry weekend or a holiday get-together? A single-weekend pool is one slate, one winner, and done by Sunday night.

Why NHL pools are straight up only
Hockey betting lines aren't really spreads. The puck line is almost always 1.5 goals, so "against the spread" in hockey just means "did the favorite win by two?" โ and so many of those games are decided by a late empty-net goal that it adds noise, not skill.
Straight-up picks keep a hockey pool clean and easy to explain: pick the team that wins, however it wins. If your group wants more strategy than that, confidence points are the better lever โ they reward knowing which games are real mismatches without dragging the puck line into it.
Hockey picking tips for your group
A few NHL-specific habits separate the steady pickers from the coin-flippers:
- โขCheck the starting goalie. Starters are often confirmed only a few hours before puck drop. Since every game locks at its own start, you can wait on a Sunday game until the goalie is announced.
- โขWatch for back-to-backs. Teams on the second night of a back-to-back often start their backup โ one of the most reliable upset signals in hockey.
- โขDon't auto-pick home teams. Home ice helps, but less than home court does in basketball.
- โขExpect upsets. Even heavy NHL favorites lose regularly, so in a confidence pool save your biggest numbers for the true mismatches.

Pricing
Free for pools up to 10 players โ every format, live scoring, full standings. Bigger group? Unlimited is $49/year (about $4 a month) or $5/month, for as many players and pools as you want. Players always join free.
Questions
- Do overtime and shootout wins count?
- Yes. You're picking the winner of the game, however it ends โ regulation, overtime, or shootout. There are no ties to worry about.
- Why can't we pick NHL games against the spread?
- Hockey's puck line is almost always 1.5 goals, so it mostly measures empty-net goals rather than picking skill. NHL pools are straight up, with confidence points available if you want more strategy.
- How many games are on the weekly slate?
- Eight by default, chosen from Friday through Sunday. The commissioner can swap any game (midweek games included) or expand to 12 or 16 games.
- When do picks lock?
- Each game locks at its own puck drop. Later games stay open, so you can make your Friday picks early and finish the rest over the weekend.
- How does an NHL survivor pool work?
- Pick one team to win each weekend. Win and you move on; lose and you're out. You can't reuse a team, and with 32 teams across roughly 25 weekends, planning ahead matters. Our NHL survivor guide covers the rules in detail.
- Can we start our hockey pool mid-season?
- Yes. Start any week โ standings begin with your first weekend, so late starters aren't playing catch-up.
- Do players need to download anything?
- No app and no account. Players open your link, enter a name and email, and pick from any phone or computer.
