Confidence pool rules, explained

A confidence pool takes a normal pick'em and adds one twist that completely changes the strategy: you don't just pick the winners, you rank how sure you are. Get a high-confidence pick right and you score big; get it wrong and you've handed points to everyone else. It rewards conviction and punishes hedging, which is why it's the most popular 'serious' office-pool format.

How confidence points work

Say there are 14 games on the slate. You rank your picks from 14 (most confident) down to 1 (least confident), using each number once. If your pick wins, you earn that many points. Your most confident pick is worth 14; your coin-flip pick is worth 1.

The player with the most total points at the end of the week wins the week, and points accumulate across the season for the overall standings.

A quick example

Imagine you assign your 14-point (highest) confidence to the Chiefs and your 1-point pick to a toss-up game. If the Chiefs win and your toss-up loses, you bank 14 and zero out the 1 — barely a dent. But if you'd flipped them, getting the toss-up right and the Chiefs wrong, you'd have left 14 points on the table. That asymmetry is the whole game: where you place your big numbers matters far more than the toss-ups.

Strategy

• •Protect your high numbers. Put your biggest confidence on games you're genuinely sure about, not the most exciting matchup.
• •Don't overthink the low numbers. A wrong 1- or 2-point pick costs almost nothing.
• •Watch the standings late in the season. If you're chasing, you may need to fade the crowd and assign big points to a contrarian pick.
• •Injuries and weather move lines for a reason — a late scratch can turn your 13-point lock into a coin flip.

Common variations

Some pools cap the slate at the 'top' games of the week so everyone ranks the same set. Others let you pick every game. A few add a tiebreaker like predicting the total points in a Monday night game. Whichever you choose, lock it before the season — confidence pools live and die on everyone using the same rules.
