Survivor pool rules and strategy

A survivor pool — also called an eliminator — is brutally simple: pick one team to win each week. If your team wins, you advance. If it loses, you're out. The last player standing takes the pot. There's no points race and no second chances, which makes every single pick feel enormous.

The rule that trips everyone up

In almost every survivor pool, you can only use each team once all season. Pick the Ravens in Week 1 and they're off the board for you the rest of the way. This is the entire strategic core of the format: you can't just ride the best team every week, so you have to plan your picks out like a chess game.

Strategy: think weeks ahead

• •Don't burn your best teams early. A heavy favorite you save for a tricky later week is worth more than using them in Week 1.
• •Look at the whole schedule. Map out which strong teams you want to 'spend' in which weeks, especially around byes.
• •Avoid the chalk when the pool is large. If 60% of players take the same favorite and it loses, the pool thins out and your odds jump — sometimes a slightly riskier pick is the smart play.
• •Survive first, optimize second. Early on, just don't get knocked out; get clever once the field shrinks.

Common variations

Some pools allow a 'buy-back' (one re-entry after an early loss) to keep people engaged. Others run multiple entries per player. A few drop the no-repeat rule entirely, which makes it much easier but far less strategic. And when several players survive to the end of the season, pools either split the pot or use a tiebreaker — commonly a points-based playoff round.

Why people love it

Survivor is the most social sports format there is. A bad beat in Week 6 becomes a story everyone retells for years, and the tension of a single must-win pick is something a points pool never quite matches. It's also dead simple to explain, which makes it perfect for a big office group.
