How to host an NFL survivor pool online

Survivor is the easiest football pool to explain and the hardest to survive: everyone picks ONE team to win each week, you can never use the same team twice, and one wrong pick eliminates you. Last player standing takes the pot. Because each player makes just one pick a week, even people who don't follow football closely stay engaged — which is why survivor pools routinely draw the biggest fields of any office format.

Hosting one online comes down to three jobs: collecting picks before kickoff without seeing chaos in your text messages, grading eliminations the moment games go final, and keeping the alive/eliminated board visible so the drama builds. This guide covers how to do all three.

Set the rules before week 1

Survivor arguments are almost always about edge cases the commissioner didn't write down. Decide these up front and publish them on the pool page:

• •Missed pick: the standard rule is a missed week counts as a loss — you're out. It's harsh, but any softer rule gets gamed.
• •Ties: an NFL tie is usually NOT a win. Decide whether a tie survives or eliminates, and write it down.
• •Buy-backs: many pools allow one re-entry (often at double the buy-in) through an early-season deadline. It roughly doubles the pot and keeps early losers engaged.
• •Multiple entries: allowing 2 entries per person grows the pot and lets players hedge. Cap it at 2–3 so one wallet can't flood the field.
• •Endgame: if several players are alive when the season ends — or everyone alive loses in the same week — decide now whether they split the pot or play on into the playoffs.

Why online beats the spreadsheet

A survivor pool run over text and a spreadsheet fails in predictable ways: someone claims they texted a pick before kickoff, the commissioner forgets to mark an elimination, and by week 6 nobody trusts the board. A pool site fixes the trust problem structurally — picks lock at kickoff automatically with a timestamp, no-repeat rules are enforced by the picker itself (used teams are simply grayed out), and eliminations grade automatically when games go final.

Commissioner playbook, week by week

• •Tuesday: the new week opens — post a one-line reminder with the pool link in the group chat.
• •Thursday morning: check who hasn't picked and nudge them before the Thursday game locks their best options.
• •Sunday night: the board updates itself; screenshot the alive/eliminated list into the chat. The dwindling survivor count is the best content your group chat will see all week.
• •After an elimination wave: announce the count — "14 entered, 5 remain" — and remind the eliminated they can still talk trash.
